Purity spiral smell like cheese ~ lazy

A purity spiral is a soycio-soychological phenomenon that has been observed on soyjak.party. It can be described as a social group rewarding itself for holding increasingly extreme views, and punishing those who question said views by excluding or attacking them.[1] Soyjak.party's purity spiral is born out of the established userbase's desire to maintain the board's post quality and prevent the hijacking of soy culture by third parties. It often culminates in a heavy paranoia of offsiters that leads to a continuously growing intolerance against anything considered "heretical" to soy culture, even if only ironic. Websites that have been totally consumed by purity spirals become echo chambers; saying something even slightly chuddy on Reddit, even if in an ironic fashion, is liable to get you 'nished.

In the Soy Community[edit | edit source]

The spiral manifests as hatred towards newfags and a habit of accusing people of being a groomer or posting EPI (which IS a problem on the 'ru.), as well as a general dissatisfaction with new OC, new raids, the site's management, and more. This is often misguided and simply results from falling for bait.

Real or perceived threats (such as Discord, twitter users, splinters, or namefags) and soyteens themselves perpetuate the harmful effects of the spiral in a vicious cycle where bait is posted or media is forced and teens take the obvious bait, propagating it and eventually leading to the creation of separate threads discussing or complaining about whatever is currently being forced. During this, they will often blame one another for the drop in quality of the site, often factionalizing along lines of seniority (nusois vs oldfags), ideology (moral vs immoralfags), and site loyalty (sharty purists vs splinter users), when in reality, neither or both parties may be truly to blame.

The purity spiral is also responsible for any new variant at all being immediately denounced as a 'cord psyop with little to no proof. In other words, the purity spiral is the total inability of soyteens to trust anything or interact with something without suspecting it as being a trap by some boogeyman.

A purity spiral is associated with an uptick of bait, falseflagging, spam, and other malicious social engineering that leads to increased distrust amongst soyteens. Over time, gemmy threads are replaced by threads complaining about or ridiculing the coaly state of the 'log, threads soyquoting the bait threads, and threads demanding rules against the media or bait in question.

The spiral is not a phenomenon that is unique to the Sharty, and has been observed in many other communities such as 4cuck, where it lead to oldfaggotry and was arguably a main reason for both the rise and fall of /qa/. This could possibly mean that the spiral will continue until the physical death of the Sharty (impossible due to incessant splinterfagging), but it is also possible that the site becoming less serious and wary of bait could slow or halt the process.

The soy purity spiral is, for all intensive purposes, limited to a small but growing population of the Sharty, usually its oldfags and a few select autists and children. (You) can prevent the continuation of the purity spiral by not taking everything seriously, yet still expressing concern toward obvious forced NAS brimstone, and by being wary of obvious cheese and saging, downdooting, or simply ignoring it. You can also help by gegging at schizos, which helps to drive them from the site.

In real life[edit | edit source]

The term "purity spiral" was coined in the 2018 book The Rise of Victimhood Culture: Microaggressions, Safe Spaces, and the New Culture Wars.[2]

The concept can be observed in various political movements and social revolutions throughout history. Some examples of settings, groups, and eras where purity spirals have occurred:

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Treatment[edit | edit source]

During severe exacerbations of the spiral, teens often demand bans or new rules to protect the quality of the site, but these can be controversial since some regard them as rulescucking and a restriction on the freedom of teens to post (one of the most attractive qualities of the site).

In reality, if teens simply learned to ignore obvious bait,(this is literally impossible though, since newGODs don't know what's bait and what isn't) most social engineering would fail and this would most likely be enough to end the spiral once and for all, but this is highly unlikely to ever happen considering the average chronological and mental age of sharty users.

For now, the jannies have set up filters to contain threads posted with certain terms, such as the names of media or namefags, in an effort to limit NAS bait and slow the progression of the spiral.
