Throughout human history, there seems to be a persistent desire to advance, experiment, and innovate, regardless of what the object of interest is. No different is this for the medium of Soyjaks, and thus Avant-Garde Soyjaks became the unsung icon of Soyjak innovation. The original Swedish Win may be considered an Avant-Garde Wojak, as it reinterpreted the self-insert nature of Wojak into a simple and (extremely) effective way to mock and incite seethe from a foe. Logically, then, the first Avant-Garde Soyjak can then be defined as a soyjak whose form or content is valued above, or even at the detriment of the original use case of telling internet strangers “You look like and say that”. This, however, will lead to contentious assignments of what is and isn’t an Avant-Garde Soyjak.
Viewed conservatively, there are two primary devices used in Avant-Garde Soyjaks: Form and Content. Form in Avant-Garde Soyjaks deal with the way a soyjak is presented to the viewer. Content in Avant-Garde Soyjaks experiment with the actual soyjaks themselves. As these are devices and not distinct clades, some Avant-Garde Soyjaks experiment in both form and content.
Soybooru has no consistently used tag for Avant-Garde Soyjaks as they’re defined here. The tags avant-garde, surreal, and abstract have a few posts but there is no definitive categorization.
Form-based Avant-Garde Soyjaks[edit | edit source]
In March 2021, a /qa/ anon posted a manifesto calling for a foray into Avant-Garde Soyjaks , where the focus of the soyjak was its presentation above its usefulness in soyquoting. While animated Soyjaks such as those made in PoyoPoyo had existed prior, this original wave of Avant-Garde Soyjaks marked a significant change in mindset, using soyjaks as a vehicle for art, instead of “mere extensions of the baseline søyjak[sic]” in the words of the OP in reference to PoyoPoyo [1]
While it may be rather unassuming to the modern soyteen today, the ethos of this manifesto (a focus on the delivery and presentation of the soyjak above all other attributes) laid the groundwork for practically all further developments in form-based Avant-Garde Soyjakking. These original Avant-Garde Soyjaks, ironically, mostly appear in soyquoting and soyduels now and are treated as any other soyjak.
On September 11th, 2023, a website that turns soyjaks into scribbly GIFs called "AI Draw Tokyo" was discovered[2]
In early March 2026, 3dgifmaker, the tool used to make the original first wave Avant-Garde Soyjaks, was rediscovered by soyteens after it was updated with an AI feature that allowed prompt generated animation.
Content-based Avant-Garde Soyjaks[edit | edit source]
These Avant-Garde Soyjaks experiment with the ideas, aesthetics, and actual depiction of soyjaks instead of the mediums in which soyjaks are delivered. They aren’t trying to portray anyone and make no attempt to. Many content-based Avant-Garde Soyjaks end up looking incredibly surreal.
Trends such as Colorjaks represent early experiments with this device.
Ontological Gray Area[edit | edit source]
Like other forms of avant-garde art, Avant-Garde Soyjaks are more felt than rigidly defined. Some soyjak trends may be considered Avant-Garde to some people, while others will disagree.
For example, stealthjaks could be considered Avant-Garde Soyjaks the way they subvert the typical presentation of soyjaks, however their usage as bait to lull 4cucks into a false sense of security before dropping the nuke that the original image secretly made them look like and say that is perhaps a contradiction with the Avant-Garde Soyjak mindset.
Likewise, Slopjaks are exercises in absurdity to make someone the artist doesn’t like look as foul and disgusting as possible, the level of abstraction and detachment from reality something diagnostic of a content-based Avant-Garde Soyjak. The fact that they’re meant to depict someone at all pushes against an assignment of Avant-Garde Soyjak, though some more recent slopjaks seem to defy any attribution at anything at all and exist purely as an abstract, disgusting nigger.
Pushing the idea of Avant-Garde Soyjaks to its limits, soyjaks used primarily for Self-inserting could be considered Avant-Garde Soyjaks by some. This is because self-insert soyjaks betray the original use case of soyjaks to the greatest extent.
